Freshman Spring
WEEK EIGHT
âI DONâT THINK YOUâRE A ROBOT,â MAX SAID. He was pretty serious about it, so she made sure to really sell it when she waved the whole sentiment off.
âSometimes I wish I was a robot.â
Even though they were deep into spring, 2:00 a.m. was a sort of perpetually chilly time of night, her windbreaker barely staved off the crisp breezes as they strolled along a silent side street.
He shook his head. âEven back in high school, when they would say shit like that . . .â He grimaced, eyes darting over to her. âI mean, not in a bad way. No one was ever mean about it they would justââ
âItâs really not a big deal,â she said. âI know what Iâm like. I live in my head.â
âYeah, but you arenât,â he said. âYou care about things. A lot, and youâre so motivated and you always know what youâre doing.â
âJust takes a little research,â she offered with a shrug. She sipped on her milkshake and shivered a little. âLike there are answers out there if you know where to look.â
He rolled his shoulders back. âIâve never known where to look. I think I wake up every single morning and have no idea what Iâm doing. And every morning it feels like Iâm choking, and I keep asking my brain, âWhat are we gonna do, Max? Itâs another day and thereâll be another one after it, just hours and hours, Max, and you gotta fill âem. What are we gonna do about that?â And I never really know.â
She stepped carefully over every crack in the sidewalk ahead of them.
âSorry,â he said, rubbing at his forehead. âI just mean to say that itâs cool that you know what you want and exactly how youâre going to get it. Itâs reassuring. That maybe I can figure something out, too.â
She leaned to the side so her arm bumps along his.
âSome days I think I donât want to be a doctor at all,â she said. The words just left her mouth and floated through the air, becoming property of the polluted city air. âItâs just been that thing Iâve been planning my entire life around and I donât know how to want to do anything else. And Iâm too deep in it now to turn back. So, I guess Iâll just be a doctor.â
âYou want to be a doctor,â he said. A car next to them honked and he jumped a little, shoulders tensing and relaxing in less than a second.
âSome days,â she said.
âI have chemistry with you, Astrid,â he said, shaking his head. âYou love it. I sit next to you and youâre just so into it. You stare at that textbook like itâs the love of your life.â
She took a long sip of her milkshake, letting her hair fall over her face.
He has chemistry with her. David would laugh.
If he was here. Which he wasnât. Because she and Max have been doing this thing a lot this semester where they hang out
